I was afraid I wouldn’t be able to post this any time soon but seeing as how Black Coat Press has already set up a webpage for the book…
I just finished this cover the other night. Drawn by my pal, legendary Swamp Thing artist and the ol’ Tyrant himself “Steadfast” Steve Bissette I was asked initially to color the cover but went ahead and designed the title lettering and cover layout. I couldn’t help myself! I wanted to riff on the “vintage monster movie poster” idea that Steve’s drawing evoked in my mind. I’m pretty pleased with the results and can’t wait for the next collaboration with Steve. There’s actually another cover we wrapped up a month or two back that I’ll be posting as well as soon as I get the green light from the publisher. This one’s a beaut, though, and I think we’re going to be printing up some limited edition posters of this that we’ll be selling soon.
Working on a recent cover job with Steve Bissette over the past couple days made me think about finally finally posting this. This is the first cover collaboration I ever did with Bissette last year. It’s a cover image commission for Mechademia, an annual forum for anime, manga and the fan arts published by the University of Minnesota Press. This particular image is for this Fall’s upcoming fourth volume to the series, this one entitled War/Time. From their website:
Volume #4: War/Time (Fall 2009) addresses the implications of war in Japanese popular culture, not only the legacy of war in these texts, but also their odd affinity for warfare, the gravitation of popular culture in the orbit of modern conflict
I’m much prouder of my Panic In Paris cover, but this was a fun image to work on.
Since today’s Steve’s birthday and he already posted this on his site, I’ll post this image from a new book cover we’re working on right now for Joe Citro’s upcoming VERMONT MONSTER GUIDE. More details when we’re given the go ahead from the publisher. For now, you should bop over to Steve’s site and see the black and white original art that I worked from to create this color version. Black and white art from yesterday’s MECHADEMIA post is there, too! After you’re done, wish the man a happy birthday!
Collaborating with Steve has been one of the best things that’s come out of my moving here to White River Junction, Vermont. I’m pretty proud of the cover we worked on this week and glad I can at least show you the top image as a teaser. It took up most of my Wednesday night and Thursday. O.o
