First things first…I may have been a bit harsh in my judgment of this fellow’s work from time to time over the years. A bit vociferously at times, I might add. And in public!!! Within earshot, I’m sure!!
Um, anyway… it would be very difficult for me to talk about the web and the wonderful things it can do for comics and not point out this video of Howard giving the keynote speech at the Utah Open Source Conference 2008 where he pretty much lays out quite nicely what it really takes to make money doing comics on the web. To a lot of folks this link is old news but if you’re interested in really knowing how it’s done you’d be remiss to miss the gist of what he’s saying. Also, wikipedia? hello? If giving the keynote fuckin’ speech at a Conference doesn’t make you somebody, I don’t know what does! Leave Howard Tayler Alone!! *cries under bedsheet*
Second order o’ business: As you could tell from yesterday’s post I’ll be updating daily and adding artwork for sale as I finish it. Watercolored inks at first, paintings and real honest-to-God comics to come soon after! All for sale as well as your “free” online entertainment!
I decided to make the jump with the help of my friend Steve Bissette, who’s also giving it a shot.
To be honest: I’m currently behind on this month’s rent and there’s no jobs in sight around these parts. I’m wrangling all my freelance and whatnot together to survive. Got on unemployment (which should kick in just in time). This month is salvageable, but next month…
Don’t get me wrong, I’m looking for work, no doubt, but it occurred to me that if i really want to make comics/illustration/art my REAL work I’ve got to work. And I’m going to work. Daily. Here on this website. Then sell that work directly to you to try and make a living. Can it be done???
Lastly: we all knew it was coming…
I was afraid I wouldn’t be able to post this any time soon but seeing as how Black Coat Press has already set up a webpage for the book…
I just finished this cover the other night. Drawn by my pal, legendary Swamp Thing artist and the ol’ Tyrant himself “Steadfast” Steve Bissette I was asked initially to color the cover but went ahead and designed the title lettering and cover layout. I couldn’t help myself! I wanted to riff on the “vintage monster movie poster” idea that Steve’s drawing evoked in my mind. I’m pretty pleased with the results and can’t wait for the next collaboration with Steve. There’s actually another cover we wrapped up a month or two back that I’ll be posting as well as soon as I get the green light from the publisher. This one’s a beaut, though, and I think we’re going to be printing up some limited edition posters of this that we’ll be selling soon.
Working on a recent cover job with Steve Bissette over the past couple days made me think about finally finally posting this. This is the first cover collaboration I ever did with Bissette last year. It’s a cover image commission for Mechademia, an annual forum for anime, manga and the fan arts published by the University of Minnesota Press. This particular image is for this Fall’s upcoming fourth volume to the series, this one entitled War/Time. From their website:
Volume #4: War/Time (Fall 2009) addresses the implications of war in Japanese popular culture, not only the legacy of war in these texts, but also their odd affinity for warfare, the gravitation of popular culture in the orbit of modern conflict
I’m much prouder of my Panic In Paris cover, but this was a fun image to work on.
Since today’s Steve’s birthday and he already posted this on his site, I’ll post this image from a new book cover we’re working on right now for Joe Citro’s upcoming VERMONT MONSTER GUIDE. More details when we’re given the go ahead from the publisher. For now, you should bop over to Steve’s site and see the black and white original art that I worked from to create this color version. Black and white art from yesterday’s MECHADEMIA post is there, too! After you’re done, wish the man a happy birthday!
Collaborating with Steve has been one of the best things that’s come out of my moving here to White River Junction, Vermont. I’m pretty proud of the cover we worked on this week and glad I can at least show you the top image as a teaser. It took up most of my Wednesday night and Thursday. O.o
Riding High: CCS Graduation, a couple drawerings and some stuff
May 15th, 2009 | by Cayetano Garza Jr.Phew! It’s been a whirlwind of a week with commencement at the Center for Cartoon Studies in full effect. I’ve been rehearsing with my pal Gabby Schultz (aka Ken Dahl) for our performances: we’re playing the music for the graduation dinner tonight and the post-ceremony reception tomorrow.
I found out yesterday that my thesis student, Ben Williams, whom I’ve been advising all year long, will indeed graduate with flying colors. I can’t tell you what an honor it’s been to join a long and distinguished list of thesis advisers that have served the CCS graduates over the past three years. Professional, famous cartoonist, these, and it was a huge responsibility that I took very seriously. I feel like I came away from this a stronger educator as well as gaining a lot of insight from a student that has completely immersed himself in mastering Japanese techniques and ideas and incorporating them into his own original work. Ben worked his ass off this year and his ink slinging abilities improved exponentially. Here’s to Ben! Congrats!!
Over the past two days I’ve been helping many other students with their web stuff (with another “client” due here any minute now). Glad I spent all that time last week getting a bit ahead on my Year of the Rat buffer! When Monday rolls around I’ll still be in great shape and ready to hit the ground running again.
And, so, in the midst of all this nuttiness, i found some time to make a couple things. First item for your inspection is this silly drawing I did for my high school graduating class FaceBook page:
and also wrap up this sketch I did a looong time ago of Steve Bissette for a contest that G Michael Dobbs was running:
Cartoonists is the CRAAAAZIEST PEOPLE!
So much to do and I’d love to write more. There will be much revelry as the third class to graduate from CCS walks across the stage tomorrow. Congratulations to all the graduating seniors! Here’s a link to the amazing two page comic that’s currently hanging in the window at the school (in full color) by CCS class of ‘08 alum Joe Lambert and current c0-fellow Alec Longstreth. Have a great weekend, you crazy kids out there, you!
